LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles has started recruiting the people who will help run the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

On July 14, LA28 opened Games-time volunteer applications as the city marked two years until the Opening Ceremony. The organizing committee says it is looking for up to 60,000 volunteers for what it calls its Volunteer Crew.

What are volunteers being asked to do?

LA28 says the volunteer program will cover eight areas: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology. Some roles will require specialized skills, including medicine and language translation.

The committee says the application portal was built with Deloitte. People who already registered interest will receive an email with next steps, but LA28 says anyone can apply. The organization also says it will give at least seven days’ notice before the application window closes.

Where will volunteers work?

Most of the volunteer jobs will be in the Los Angeles area, according to LA28. But the committee says assignments will also reach beyond Southern California, including Oklahoma City and soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

That spread reflects how the 2028 Games are being planned. LA28 says the Olympic Games will run from July 14 to July 30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games will run from Aug. 15 to Aug. 27, 2028.

Why does this matter for Los Angeles?

The volunteer rollout is one of the first big public steps in the lead-up to the Games. LA28 says these will be the third Olympics held in Los Angeles, after 1932 and 1984, and the city’s first Paralympic Games.

The organizing committee also frames volunteering as part of the city’s broader civic effort. Its volunteer page says it has community volunteering opportunities with local organizations focused on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.

LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover told Reuters that recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people” and said “volunteers will be a key part of that experience.”

For residents who want to be involved before the Games arrive, LA28 says the application window is now open.
