ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22 (DC Times Online) — Maryland election officials removed Ian Andre Roberts from the state voter rolls on June 2, more than a decade after he first appeared there, according to Maryland election records cited in reporting. The records also show the state mailed absentee ballots to Roberts and that he had been registered twice.
Republican Delegate Matt Morgan, who chairs the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, said the case shows why “Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.” Morgan and other Republicans have used the matter to press state election officials on how the registration remained active for so long.
The records cited in the reporting show Roberts checked the citizenship box and signed registration forms under penalty of perjury. The reporting did not show that he cast a ballot in Maryland.
Maryland elections administrator Jared DeMarinis warned in January against “improper cancellation,” a reference to removing eligible voters by mistake while election officials review registrations. Congressional scrutiny of the case has continued as state officials have not publicly detailed the full administrative basis for the removal in the material reviewed.
