NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 6 (Our Newport Beach) — Newport Beach police said they arrested 402 people during Fourth of July celebrations, with about half of the arrests tied to a single incident on the Balboa Peninsula on Saturday night.
The Newport Beach Police Department said it declared an unlawful assembly and then brought in more than 350 officers from the department and 17 regional law enforcement agencies to clear the area, disperse the crowd, restore emergency access and protect residents and visitors.
The city’s mayor said more than 400 people were arrested over 36 hours. Police also said firefighters responded to more than 100 emergency incidents, including 10 fires, and transported 44 people to local hospitals.
Police said about 200 people remained near 28th Street after repeated dispersal orders. ABC7 reported that the department arrested 60 people during the same time window last year, and the reports did not identify any defendants or say whether charges had been filed.
