WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — The Senate rejected Sen. Tim Kaine’s Iran war powers resolution Wednesday in a 50-47 vote, blocking an effort to require Congress to authorize any further U.S. military action involving Iran.
The measure would have directed President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities involving Iran unless lawmakers approved additional action. It had cleared an earlier procedural hurdle last month on a 50-47 vote.
Two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted to advance the resolution. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted present, and Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted no.
The vote came after Trump met behind closed doors with Senate Republicans at a lunch where he criticized the earlier Iran vote. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana later said Trump “raised his voice” and that he “lost my temper.”
Trump later posted on Truth Social that the vote “puts Iran on notice.” The House had already passed a similar Iran war powers resolution earlier in the month, according to congressional vote results.
