HESPERIA, Calif., July 14 (Our Hesperia) — Visitors heading to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area in Hesperia are being kept out of the water after California State Parks and the California Department of Water Resources reported a harmful algae bloom and elevated microcystin toxin levels at the lake.
State Parks says the site is under a Danger Advisory, meaning people should stay out of the water, including wading. The agency says swim beaches are closed and all water-contact recreation is prohibited until further notice.
The park’s guidance tells visitors not to swim, boat, waterski, jet ski or touch visible algae scum. It also warns against letting pets into or near the water, drinking lake water or eating fish or shellfish from the lake.
Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area is at 13990 Sawpit Canyon Rd. in Hesperia, off Highway 138 and Cleghorn Road. State Parks says harmful algae advisories are updated weekly at entrances and other water-contact areas, and that DWR tests the water regularly.
For travelers planning a stop at the lake, the practical takeaway is that beach and water recreation access remains restricted while the advisory is in place.
