OCEANSIDE, Calif., July 1 (Laguna Beach Daily) — A Southern California couple says a moving company doubled the cost of their interstate move to North Carolina and is still keeping their belongings after an attempted delivery that came before they were due to arrive.
John Nelson said the couple hired a moving broker for a move from Oceanside, in San Diego County, with an original contract of more than $16,000 and a $7,000 deposit. He said movers arrived at the home at the end of May and then claimed there were more items than first assessed, raising the total to $32,000.
Nelson said the couple told the movers they would not be at the North Carolina destination until June 10, but the company still tried to deliver the shipment on June 3. After no one was there to receive it, he said, the company added a redelivery fee.
He said he suspects the June 3 delivery attempt may have been staged after he watched video of the truck arriving. Nelson said the family is still trying to get its property back, describing the shipment as being held “for ransom.”
Nelson said the couple filed police reports in Oceanside and in their destination city, and submitted complaints to the Better Business Bureau. The moving company was not identified in the account, and no response from the company was included.
